Step 3: Make the USB microphone the default audio input device. If you have another audio device installed, such as a standalone headset or a webcam with internal mic, you will need to make your USB microphone the dominant input device. Go to the “Control Panel,” select “Hardware and Sound,” and then click on “Manage Audio Devices.” A new window will pop up. Go to the “Recording” tab, highlight the microphone you just installed, and then click “Set Default.”

Test the microphone. Open the Windows Sound Recorder, and press “Record.” Speak into the microphone. If you see the equalizer moving, your USB microphone is functioning properly. Note: If you need to turn the volume down or up, you can use internal software controls.
